Laura and Floyd's Trip to Europe - July 2005
We left on July 8th and returned on July 24th. We visited London, Paris, Southern France, Venice, and Rome. Our day by day itenerary is as follows:
Friday July 8th - Left Sea-tac airport at 6:40 and had a 9 1/2 hour flight to London. We flew British Air and it was very nice.
Sat July 9th - Arrived at London Heathrow airport at 11:00 am. Promptly got lost trying to figure out where our hotel was. Got charged $12 trying to make a phone call to the hotel on a pay phone, we never could figure out the payphones. We then put our stuff in the hotel and our goal was to take the Tube to the train station to get our Chunnel tickets reserved. Well some of the Tube lines were closed due to the terroist attacks so we got stuck at Hyde Park so we hung out there and then walked to Buckingham Palace. Exhausted we went home and went to bed at 8:00.
Sun July 10th - We visited the Tower of London, went on the London Eye ate at a pub and did a Jack the Ripper tour which was very cool.
Mon July 11th - Did a tour of Westminster Abbey, where we got to see Issac Newton, Shakespere, and lots of Englands monarch's graves. The most ironic tomb was that of King Edward, he really hated Scottland so he said to make his tomb easily accessible and with no decorations so that when the army went to go and conquer Scottland they could easily get his bones out and bring them to battle with them. He also said not to decorate his tomb until Scottland was conquered. Then we went to Leschter Square to find something to eat and that night we went to see Saturday Night Fever.
Tues July 12th - Took a trip to Salsbury and Stonehenge
Wed July 13th - Went to see Wimbledon. Then too the Chunnel to Paris.
Thur July 14th - Went to the top of the Eiffel Tower. Visited the Musee d'Orssay and then picniked at the Eiffel Tower park waiting for the fireworks for Bastille Day.
Fri July 15th - Did a DaVinci Code Tour which included the Lovure. Visited Notre Dame, and ate some really good ice cream. Then took an overnight train to Ax Les Thermes in the Pyranees mountains to watch the Tour de France.
Sat July 16th - Arrived in Ax Les Thermes at 7:00 am to watch the Tour de France. We met some guys on the train, Eric, Garrett, and Kyle and hung out with them for the day. We took a gondala up to the top of the mountain where the stage finish was. The caravan came at 3:30 and the first rider came at about 4:30. It was in the 90's so it was a hot day, but a lot of fun.
Sun July 17th - We went to the zoo Sunday morning while we waited till we could check into our hotel room. That night we went on a bicycle tour which was really cool.
Mon July 18th - Slept in! Went on a tour of the Latin Quarter and Medieval Europe. Ate the best ice cream so far, and climbed to the top of Notre Dame.
Tues July 19th - Went to the catacombs and then did a tour of the French Revolution. We got on the train for an overnight trip to Venice.
Wed July 20th - Spent the day in Venice. We visited the Ducal Palace and got lost in the winding mazes they call streets in Venice. Then we would get on the vaporetto and figure out where we were and do it again.
Thur July 21st - Woke up in the morning and took the train to Rome. That night we went and visited the Pantheon and walked around the Colloseum.
Friday July 22nd - Went to visit Vatican city. Climbed St Peter's Basillica and then went and saw the Sistene Chapel. After that we went to the Colloseum and walked around inside. Then went over to the Roman Forum walked around there for awhile.
Sat July 23rd - Took the subway to Ostia Antica and looked at all the ancient ruins. Came back to our hotel to watch the final time trial of the Tour de France on TV. That night we ate the best ice cream ever!
Sun July 24th - Woke up in the morning and had a crazy driver shuttle us to the airport. Flew to London and had a 5 hour lay over. Bought Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince. Then flew home to Seattle. That was a long day, I think 33 hours to be exact.
